Bulgaria marks international Roma Day

Bulgaria has a strong Roma community in country, as according to official statistics, some 4.7 per cent of the total population are from that ethnic group.
April 8 was officially declared as the International Day of the Roma in 1990 in Serock, Poland, the site of the fourth World Romani Congress of the International Romani Union (IRU), in honour of the first major international meeting of Romani representatives, 7-12 of April, 1971 in Chelsfieldnear London
The Day also draws attention to discrimination directed to Roma and Gypsy communities globally and to call for human rights of all to be respected and observed.
In Bulgaria, the Government will mark the event along with the National Council for Cooperation on Ethnic and Demographic Issues, presided by deputy prime minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Dnevnik daily reported.
The process and development of Roma integration in Bulgaria will be presented before Parliament by Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva, ministers, MPs, MEPs and ambassadors from other European member states.
